Know the terminology
Venous thromboembolism, or VTE, includes deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Suspected VTE requires a diagnostic pathway; an anticoagulation information tool does not establish the diagnosis.
Separate the stages
Initial treatment, the primary treatment period and decisions about longer-term prevention have different purposes. A review should identify which stage is being considered before applying a recommendation.
Recognise a changing context
The circumstances of the event, ongoing risk factors and bleeding risk shape the longer-term discussion. Cancer, pregnancy and other special populations may require dedicated guidance. The ASH VTE guideline collection provides distinct resources across these clinical settings.
The key idea
Identify the stage and the population before selecting a guideline pathway.
